EVOLUTION SCOOTERS - SOMETHING RADICAL!

Its often regarded risky business straying from the path in terms of what constitutes a good scooter do. ‘Different’ dj’s spinning ‘different’ music can cause havoc with your average lads psyche and turn their metaphorical dance bladder on its arse….much like a goldfish swimming through iced water!...throw in free food - not just your average finger food mezze of crabstix and sausage rolls but proper fodder from the kitchen of John Stevenson…including Yorkshire Pudding Wraps (I kid you not!!) and you have the ability to render your average scooter boy menkal with despair at fecking about with his weekend recipe! …’we’re blokes and we don’t like change!?’

The launch of Evolution Scooters (Formally Lambretta Evolution and EDM Racepaints, and sponsors to the YSA Invasion on a number of occasions) new product range was just one of those nights. It had all the usual ingredients ie band, in the shape of local nutters Barmy Surplus, Dearne Valley dj’s, playing the usual classics, drunken party people dancing like they didn’t care, and beer, but it also came with the added showcasing of the afore mentioned new products, posh nosh, scooter dolly’s (see Phil’s photo’s), goodie bags including bottle opener (or gig spanner as we call them round these parts), and the opportunity to book test rides on either of the 3 new machines on display. Dj Scootabilly from Dearne Valley SC even dared to spin a few old school rave and Dubwise tunes that went down just as well as the Yorkshire pudding wraps!

We did run a raffle on the night, (ah…some traditions simply wont lie down!!) and 3 unclaimed prizes still stand so if you have any of the following tickets: Orange 15 – Orange 248 or Pink 271 then give the lads at Evolution Scooter a shout. All proceeds went to the BBC Radio Sheffield Kids Scanner Appeal at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

The bottom line with this event was 2 fold. It was a thank you to Ricks existing customers, the ones who have seen him through the recession, the very ones he rides with, drinks with, and shares most of his tool cupboard with. It also served as a promotional evening for the new products and a celebration of his new partnership with Peter and Evolution Scooters.

250 people were invited, it was free but due to fire regs and food etc. we needed to know how many to cater for so tickets were a must. All the usual South Yorkshire suspects were in attendance but also good people from Rochdale, Birmingham, Manchester, and Leicester had made the journey, as one lad said. ‘Curiosity got the better of me, I had heard about Evolution Scooters on the grapevine, I wanted to make sure I got the full low down on them and book a test ride’. Even Sticky had put a show in, he has always shown a healthy interest in Ricks innovations and is always very welcome round this neck of the woods but he does need some more puddings down him…bless!...far too thin compared to your average Northern Scooter Boy!

So what is an Evolution scooter?...well…they come in a few different incarnations. All panels and bodywork on all models are made of lightweight GRP, or fibreglass to numptys like me. Purpose build chassis’ strip more weight from the machines, (the SBS weighs less than a Zip 50!) and other than the Classic Evo (Lambretta powered), all donor lumps, running gear and other gubbings are sourced brand fire new by Evolution Scooters.

The SBS (Slim Bodied Sports) is based on a classic Lambretta GP shape. It is geared, and sits on the road and under your arse like any series 3 Lambretta would. Because this is a new production vehicle it has indicators fitted, however they are very discreet and in my opinion you compromise nothing in terms of looks. It is powered by a 4 stroke pit bike engine, is chain driven and comes in 50cc, 125cc and 160cc options. The engine sits very comfortably under the bodywork, and absolutely no lines have been compromised what so ever. It sounds bonkers on the ears by the way, by that I don’t mean inner ear bursting, just like nothing I’ve ever heard before, chewing a thick blood red rare steak……I love it!

The WBT (Wide Bodied Tourer) is in essence a lightweight, traditionally geared 2 stroke LML / P2 powered machine. Again a couple of cc options are available, 125 and 200. Whilst the WBT is unique in a number of ways in terms of its styling, (The front mudguard is simply too cool for skool!) it does take more than a cursory nod in the direction of the Vespa 150 Super, side panel butty box n all. Like all new production models kicking the barn door open at Evolution Scooter, the WBT will be fully SVA tested and ready to roll.

So there you have it, all be it in a very small nutshell. The celebratory launch party strayed from the path of what we consider to be a ‘normal scooter do’ ever so slightly, (who was it who said…’oh yeh!??...so what’s normal then!?’) yet it was received by all attendees extremely well, (the bar was supped dry of lager by 12.30 pm the following day, much to the annoyance of their regulars.)  I have lasting memories of Alan from Dearne Valley Scooter Club and Barmy Surplus doing a hand spring across the floor, immediately tucking into a forward role, and utilising a box of prawn cocktail crisps to catch his ample head, all in one ninja like movement!??

The scooters themselves speak volumes about the team at Evolution Scooters, the innovation, the ideas, the months of development, the creativity…..and not one magic mushroom has assisted any part of this process! You could argue that the new Evolution range doesn’t just stray from the path slightly, some might even say the machines take a full on running leap at the boundary fence and vault the fecker with not so much as a glance over the shoulder at tradition. I however would argue the very opposite. Take a look….take another look….then take a ride…leave your wallet in you pocket cos a test ride only costs a couple of hours of your time!
