If you don't know "Roob" yet, you surely will by the end of the year. For one reason or another.
Something of a gentle giant, this softly spoken lad from Darlington has a lot more to offer the Scootering scene than just the two fine Lambrettas that adorn this page. We met up with Mr Harker at the video shoot for Red Star's new "Frenzy" Video for a natter.
It turns out that Roob fell out with Scootering in the late 90s as, in his opinion, the scene had become stale. "I was painting scooters like Firestarter, but everyone was admiring Ochre GP's and Old English White SX's - once you've seen one of them, you've seen 'em all!" he says, flashing his gold teeth. By this time he was well into breeding Staffordshire Bull Terriers - his other passion. He is an acredited shower and judge of the breed on the cicuit too - hence the theme of his stunning GP shown on this page. The imagery here on this machine reflects his love of the breed and some of the finest animals he has bred and owned.
His other machine reflects quite a different interest, and we will not ask too many questions as to where the theme of scantily/rubber clad/gimp masked/large breasted ladies came from. Needless to say this is a stunning cutdown Lambretta of the highest order. The murals are quite simply stunning and have been applied by Col Fitzgerald of Garage Artworks - a good pal of Roob's. "Col has done me a stunning job - I can't recommend the guy enough". He then waxes lyrical about how Col completed the stunning murals on his petrol tank in less than 36 hours - a deadline that was set by the big fella in jest! My particular favourite mural (because I have no interest in scantily clad women in rubber with big tits - ed) is the speedo - just check out the detail - awesome!
Roob has just set up his own business in January 2010 - Elite Refinishing - specialising in shot blasting and powder coating. "After 15 years in the industry I was made redundant - I had a bit of money behind me that I'd inherited, so thought I'd give it a go" - and he hasn't looked back to date. "I am working long hours at the moment - starting early morning to keep up with customers requirements" he adds "I know from experience it's important not to be kept waiting so I am trying my hardest to deliver ahead of schedule every time". Elite Refinishing has just become a YSA Partner Dealer, and is offering 10% off his already very competetive price list to Cardholders for all his services. "I think the YSA have done a fantastic job with the Card scheme for the members and dealers too - it's a great idea"
Roob is also a member of the YSA Events team, co-ordinating security at all major events.
