SKEGVASION 2011
After the last minute trouble with the campsite everything seemed to move along ok, once we found another site. The Welcome Inn did just that laying on a large green at the front of the pub with swings, a slide, and even a bouncy castle.
Tommy the landlord give us full use of his place and even put on a cheaper scooterist menu and also a Builders breakfast. Thursday the YSA staff arrived early to start marking the site out sorting the toilets and showers, then onto a couple of drinks and a karaoke before an early night to be ready for a busy Friday morning.
On our arrival on Friday morning there was already some early arrivals, Gate set up and ysa stall with a few new skegvasion items all ready, we sat back and waited for scooterists to turn up and they soon did with a steady arrival of people this site was soon filling up so did the rain with stories from people saying they had travelled most of the way to skegness with decent whether, getting 30 mins away and then getting soaked.

Friday night arrived and it was a trip of 1.5 miles trip down to the front to the Grand Central, 2 weeks before the event we had travelled down to have a look at the club and the 4th floor looked as if it would not be finished, we were promised it would be and we were not to be disappointed. This place is a credit to the owner of the place, once again we got full use of the night club, lower ground was the general anyone was welcome in this area, the 2nd floor had the stage with a bar, 3rd floor overlooked the stage with a great view for those who wanted a better look of the bands, and with music from the mod 4 it djs.
|
The 4th floor was for the soul and ska with dukesy and glynn and the 4th floor looked great as when we had seen it all the floors were not down and as said didn’t look as if it would ever be ready.
Right back to Friday night we started with a band called The People who played mostly there own type of music lovin my soul, little man in a boat, they give us a great 30 mins set. Then it was on to an acoustic set from Tom Hingley from the Inspiral Carpets, coming in with this is how I feel, sit down, plus loads more in a 45 minute set. |
Then the room filled up with anticipation of Pauline Blacks, THE SELECTER and they did not spoil the spirit of the night asking if we were selecterised and started with Selecter, 3 minute hero,
Time is hard, and ending with too much pressure with great help from the crowd. The set seemed to be over so fast and then Pauline retired to the back of the hall to sign merchandise and queues proved how much everyone had enjoyed the Selecter. The rest of the night was now taken over by the djs general scooter sounds on the lower floors and the soul and ska on the top floor, All floors looked very busy. |
Saturday morning arrives and the sun is shining, inside the stalls are all setting up, even some of them getting to use the shops that had not been rented out. The stalls included parts, clothes, bling, and also the ysa stall.
Outside was the custom show which had a few less entrants to what we normally have at a ysa invasion but still some nice scooters, We even had a vw van with a scooter in tow in the doorway he had an album with all the work he had done to bring it back to its nice condition. During the day was a steady flow of people passing through the door it was so hard to tell numbers during the day with so many people having the chance to go to the pubs and shops and arcades around town. On the afternoon we had a battle of bands, We had only 2 bands for this as the People had offered to do the support slot on Friday night. The first band we had were a Yorkshire band The Superlatives, who were excellent with a mixture of punk and ska sounds, this is a band I think most of us have seen before but if not I think you will over the next year or so at some scooter events near you. |
The second band (sorry can’t remember there name) were from Skegness way and were outstanding, the young lady on trumpet and backing could throw out some vocals along with the lead singer, At first they seemed a bit nervous but soon got into the swing and gave us a great set.
With a break to the day to get the halls tidied up and ready for the night event. |
The night time started with a YSA usual RED STAR with Will and the boys up for it, they gave us a great set as usual with tracks like woman, stand up, pressure drop, disco confussion, then we had the last song low down fenzy which we had our own Nana up dancing with Will.
With an interval it was time for The BEAT the place was now packed and Ranking Roger urged everyone to move closer and started with whine and grind and continued with everyone’s favourites like too nice to talk to, best friend, with the whole room now bouncing we went in to click click, doors to your heart, them 80 minutes had flown by and Roger was saying how great it was to see 3 generations of rude boys and rude girls in one room and then it was into an extended version of jackpot that even ran into the encore. |
After the bands the raffle was drawn and the first prize was for the giant banner that was at back of stage and a large YSA poster both were signed by all the bands that played over the weekend.
With all that finished it was time for djs to take back over till the end of the night, then any who were still awake could stay on the lower floor till 4am.
Well that also became the end of the ysa Skegvasion and I feel was a successful one.
ROLL ON NEXT YEARS YSA INVASION.
